Cypriot leaders continue Cyprus reunification talks

Turkish Cypriot and Greek Cypriot leaders discussed procedures of Cyprus reunification talks and reaffirmed that talks would go on under UN mediation at their meeting on Monday.
President Dervis Eroglu of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) and Greek Cypriot leader Demetris Christofias met at the residence of UN Secretary-General’s Special Envoy in Cyprus Lisa Buttenheim in the buffer zone.
Following the meeting, UN Secretary-General’s Special Adviser on Cyprus Alexander Downer said that leaders’ next meeting would take place on March 4. Downer also said that leaders agreed to continue talks under UN mediation.
Turkish Cypriot and Greek Cypriot leaders have been negotiating on a solution to Cyprus problem in a bid to reunify the island since 2008. The island has been divided since 1974 when an Athens-backed Greek Cypriot military coup on the island led to Turkey’s intervention based on its rights stemming from the Treaty of Guarantee.
