Martin Scorsese's "The Aviator" led Tuesday's announcement with 11 nominations, the most of any film this cycle, though it falls short of the record 14 nods shared by "Titanic" (1997) and "All About Eve" (1950).
Two performers earned double nominations: Jamie Foxx, recognized as best actor for "Ray" and best supporting actor for "Collateral," and Clint Eastwood, 74, nominated for both directing and best actor for "Million Dollar Baby." Foxx joins only nine previous performers ever nominated in both leading and supporting categories in the same year.
A biopic surge in 2004 shaped the best actor field: four of the five nominees played real people. Foxx portrayed Ray Charles, Johnny Depp played author J.M. Barrie, Leonardo DiCaprio played billionaire Howard Hughes, and Don Cheadle played hotel manager Paul Rusesabagina. Only Eastwood took on a fictional character.
Hilary Swank, nominated for best actress, was the sole 2005 contender who had already won the award, for "Boys Don't Cry" in 2000. Scorsese has collected six career nominations without a win; his current best director nod is his fifth in that category. Colombia's Catalina Sandino Moreno earned a best actress nomination for the non-English-language "Maria Full of Grace," only the 25th such nomination in Oscar history.
