Yahoo and Google both rolled out television search tools in January 2005, opening a new front in their rivalry for online search dominance.
Google's offering lets users find content from broadcasters including Fox News, C-Span, PBS, and the NBA, returning still images and text excerpts rather than direct video links. Co-founder Larry Page said the tool aims to do for television what Google did for the web.
Yahoo's competing test service covers BBC, Bloomberg TV, and BSkyB. Neither company announced plans to broaden their respective services beyond their initial channel lineups.
