Greece Mulls Fence Along Part of its Border with Turkey

Greece’s public order minister says the Athens government is considering building a fence along part of its border with Turkey to curtail illegal immigration.
Christos Papoutsis says the fence would cover a 12.5 kilometer section of the border that does not run along the Meric (Evros) River — the natural boundary that separates the two countries.
Papoutsis is widely quoted in Greek media as saying the fence, which is still being debated, would be part of an effort to boost surveillance along the 150-kilometer Greek-Turkish frontier.
Analysts say the border is one of the busiest transit points for illegal migrants entering the European Union.
The Warsaw-based EU border management agency Frontex says migrants crossing into Greece come from South Asia, the Middle East and Africa.
