A software bug silenced alarms on millions of iPhones during the New Year's weekend, causing users across the world to sleep through appointments and morning obligations. The malfunction appeared to affect non-repeating alarms set for 1 or 2 January.
Apple acknowledged the problem in a statement to Macworld magazine. Spokeswoman Natalie Harrison said the company was aware of the issue and advised users to set recurring alarms as a workaround, adding that all alarms would function normally from 3 January onward.
The failure was the second of its kind within a few months. A similar glitch surfaced in late October and early November, when iPhone owners in Australia and the United Kingdom reported that their alarms had not adjusted to daylight saving time, leaving many late for work.
The January incident drew a surge of complaints on Twitter. Technology site Engadget reported that while the newest iPhone and iPod models launched in November appeared most affected, older devices may also have been impacted.
