US soldier killed in northern Iraq

MOSUL, Iraq, Jan 23 (AFP) - A US soldier was killed in a firefight with Iraqi rebels in the northern city of Mosul on Saturday, a US officer told AFP Sunday.
"One soldier was killed in a firefight. He was shot by insurgents," said Lieutenant Colonel Michael Kurilla.
The death raises the number of US soldiers killed in Iraq to 1,366 since the March 2003 invasion, according to the latest figures from the Pentagon.
Twenty US soldiers have died in the volatile city of Mosul since December 21 when a suicide bomber blew himself up in an army mess hall, killing 22 people, including 14 US troops.
