KONYA (AA) - ''Municipality of (central city of) Konya and privately-owned Selcuklu Hospital, will send a relief team comprised of three doctors and two employees who will distribute food to tsunami survivors in Sumatra island of Indonesia'', Seyit Karaca, the Chairman of Executive Board of Private Selcuklu Hospital, said on Wednesday.
Karaca told a press conference that death toll reached almost 200,000 after the quake and tsunami disaster that hit South Asia, and the region needed every kind of assistance.
The team would leave for Aceh region of Indonesia today (Wednesday), Karaca said.
Karaca added, ''our doctors will provide medical care to survivors. Other two officials will serve hot meal to 1,200 people daily. Our team will stay there for a month, and extend health and food assistance worth about 50,000 U.S. dollars.''
On the other hand, Istanbul Vocational Chambers Coordination called on residents to take part in a commemoration ceremony which will be held at Istanbul's Taksim Square on January 15th.
The tsunami waves triggered by an 8.9 magnitude underwater earthquake hit southern Asia on December 26th, 2004, killing more than 160,000 people in India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Myanmar, Sri Lanka, Thailand and Bangladesh.
