ANKARA (AA) - General John Abizaid, Commander of the U.S. Central Command, said on Tuesday that use of Incirlik base in logistic sense was discussed at his meeting with Turkish Foreign Minister & Deputy Prime Minister Abdullah Gul.
Speaking to press after the meeting, Abizaid said Incirlik was a Turkish base, not a U.S. base, stating that, ''as an ally, we want to use the facilities there. We think it would be good both for us and Turkey if we can use it.''
Abizaid said terrorist organization PKK/KONGRA-GEL, security in Iraq, and elections were also discussed at the meeting.
Stating that the U.S. knew that Turkey accepted PKK as a terrorist organization, Abizaid said, ''similarly, we are aware of the situation. There are very different studies which our soldiers should do with the Iraqi security forces there. We accept dealing with PKK issue in time.''
Replying to a question, Abizaid said security issue in Iraq, particularly in Sunnite regions was very serious, and noted that resistance continued in some regions.
Abizaid said they tried to provide participation of moderate sunnites to elections.
Abizaid said an important step would be taken in the region on the way to peace and stability in case elections take place with the participation of all parties.
