ANKARA (AA) - Portuguese Navy Chief of Staff, Admiral Francisco Antonio Torres Vidal Abreu has paid a visit to the Turkish Navy Chief of Staff Admiral Ozden Ornek today, upon an invitation from Ornek.
Admiral Abreu was welcomed at the Turkish Navy Headquarters in Ankara with a military ceremony. ''Abreu's visit will contribute to the friendship between Turkey and Portugal,'' said Ornek.
According to Admiral Ornek, relations between the Turkish and Portuguese Navy extends back 500 years. ''We will have a chance to discuss issues within the framework of NATO,'' told Ornek.
Admiral Abreu has remarked that, as nations with large sea borders, Portugal and Turkey have many similarities. ''My visit will make our ties stronger,'' expressed Abreu.
He added that terrorist threats from off-shore put an immense responsibility on the naval forces. ''We hope to cooperate with the Turkish Navy against international terrorism,'' stressed Abreu.
Abreu will visit the Navy Command in Golcuk, Naval War Academy in Tuzla, Istanbul, and several historical and tourist sites before departing for Portugal on January 14.
