ANKARA, Jan 12 (AFP) - Doctors have removed parasites weighing a total of three kilograms (6.6 pounds) from the stomach of a young woman in central Turkey in what they have described as a rare case in medicine, Anatolia news agency reported on Wednesday.
Kemal Arslan, the surgeon who operated the 18-year-old patient in Alaca town in the province of Corum, told Anatolia that the size of the parasites varied between five and 20 centimeters (two and eight inches) and weighed a total of three kilograms.
"Normally intestinal parasites are easily treated with drugs, but we had to operate on this patient because her intestines were blocked," he said.
The woman was recovering well after the surgery, he said.
