BAGHDAD, Jan 9 (AFP) - An official in the political party of Iraq's US-backed interim Prime Minister Iyad Allawi was gunned down in Baghdad on Sunday, an interior ministry official said.
Midhat Jassim Abdul Hassan of the Iraqi National Accord party was killed and his daughter wounded when they were attacked with machine guns while traveling inside Baghdad, said the official, asking not to be named.
US and Iraqi officials have warned that, with just three weeks left to promised January 30 elections, insurgents are likely to step up their campaign of sabotage.
