PARIS, Jan 6 (AFP) - The number of foreigners confirmed by their countries of origin as having died in the tsunamis that swept south Asia stood at 401 on Thursday, with several thousand still officially reported as missing, believed dead, and many others unaccounted for.
The confirmed toll was expected to rise as new identifications were completed and missing persons were declared dead.
In Thailand, where the biggest numbers of foreign tourists were holidaying, the interior ministry said that there were 2,510 foreigners among the 5,288 dead registered in the catastrophe, and 940 foreigners among the 3,716 missing.
The following is a country-by-country breakdown of confirmed casualties.
The overall figure of missing people is approximate, with some authorities listing all those who had failed to make contact, and others listing only those specifically reported as having disappeared in the maelstrom.
Several countries have not released the number of people missing across the region, but their numbers are believed to reach the hundreds.
