BANGKOK (AA) - A group from Turkish Red Crescent arrived in Thailand on Tuesday to extend assistance to survivors of the massive quake and tsunami waves that hit South Asia.
11 members of Turkish Red Crescent will be divided in three groups. One of the groups including five people will help the quake survivors in Thailand and Singapore, while three others will serve Indonesia and another three Red Crescent officials will be on mission in Sri Lanka.
Turkish Red Crescent team will extend monetary assistance for the time being, and demand humanitarian aid from its headquarters according to the problems of the disaster zone they are serving.
Members of Turkish Red Crescent will undertake the responsibility of a town in every quake-stricken country, and extend nutrition and health assistance. They will extend emergency aid for the first two months, and extend rehabilitation efforts in the following three months and work to heal the wounds in the quake zone.
Turkish Red Crescent officials will contact international organizations like the United Nations (UN), the International Federation of Red Cross and Crescent Societies (IFRC) and International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), and make monetary and rehabilitation assistance to quake survivors in the medium and long term.
The tsunami waves triggered by an 8.9 magnitude underwater earthquake hit southern Asia on December 26th, 2004 killing about 150,000 people in India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Myanmar, Sri Lanka, Thailand and Bangladesh.
