ANKARA, Dec 31 (AFP) - Turkish Foreign Minister Abdullah Gul said Friday that one Turkish national was killed and 55 others remained unaccounted for after the tidal wave disaster in Asia.
"There is one Turkish national whom we know for sure was killed," Gul told a press conference here.
He said the victim had died in Thailand but gave no further details.
Turkish newspapers reported that the victim was a 34-year-old woman who was honeymooning on Phuket island after getting married a week ago.
Gul said most of the nearly 3,000 Turks believed to have been in the region when the disaster struck had managed to contact Turkish authorities but said 55 people were still unaccounted for.
Most of them had gone to the region as tourists, while a small number worked either as diving instructors or in hotels and travel agencies, officials say.
More than 125,000 people were confirmed dead by Friday after a massive earthquake off Indonesia unleashed killer tsunamis in the Indian Ocean on Sunday.
