ANKARA, Dec 30 (AFP) - An earthquake measuring 4.6 on the Richter scale jolted Turkey's capital overnight, but there were no casualties, officials said Thursday.
The epicenter of the tremor, which struck at 00:22 a.m. (2122 GMT), was at the town of Cubuk, about 40 kilometres (25 miles) northeast of Ankara, the Istanbul-based Kandilli seismological institute said.
The quake caused panic in Cubuk, sending residents running into the streets, Anatolia news agency reported. Local officials said nobody had been injured.
Earthquakes are frequent in Turkey, where some 20,000 people were killed in two massive tremors in August and November 1999.
