Iranian President Scorns UN Security Council, Says World Needs New Institutions

ISTANBUL - Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has defied again the UN Security Council's call for international sanctions on Tehran over its nuclear program, labelling the council "the most undemocratic institution in the world."

"The very foundations of the UN Security Council are unjust. A few of the members had the right to veto and they are ruling the world as they wish. This is the end of the road for UN Security Council. We need new institutions," Ahmadinejad on Tuesday told an Istanbul summit on confidence-building measures in Asia.

The Iranian president also accused the United States for failing to force Israel to sign the non-proliferation treaty despite international calls on the Jewish state to become part to the agreement.

"Nearly 200 countries urged Israel to sign the NPT but the U.S. has made no moves. May be because they are supporting the Zionist regime," Ahmadinejad said.

Ahmadinejad said the Istanbul summit of the Conference on Interaction and Confidence Building Measures in Asia (CICA) would voice "a bold" opposition against current circumstances of what he called "the unilateral order of the world."

"Our expectation from this summit is that we strengthen regional cooperation, exchange of views and devise ways to make progress for a new world order," he said.
