Turkey Expresses Deep Sorrow Over Death Of Catholic Bishop

ANKARA - Turkish Foreign Ministry on Thursday expressed deep sorrow over the death of Luigi Padovese, the Pope's apostolic vicar in Anatolia.

Earlier in the day, Luigi Padovese was stabbed to death by his driver in his house in Iskenderun town of the southern province of Hatay.

The ministry said in a statement that Padovese was a friend of Turkey and his death was an important loss for both religious and scientific aspects.

The statement said Turkish people reacted to such an attack to a religious figure no matter what the motive was, adding that the suspect, who had psychological problems, was caught with his weapon.

It said detailed information about the incident would be made public following the ongoing investigation.
