WASHINGTON D.C. (AA) - U.S. Secretary of State Colin Powell called Turkish Foreign Minister & Deputy Prime Minister Abdullah Gul on the phone on Friday, and congratulated him for success of Turkey at the EU Summit in Brussels.
Richard Boucher, spokesman of the U.S. State Department, said that Powell called Gul on the phone after the EU decided to open full membership negotiations on October 3rd, 2005, and congratulated him for great success of Turkey.
During the telephone conversation, Powell said that the United States welcomed the EU's decision, and that the Turkey's accession to the EU at the end of the negotiation process would be beneficial to both Turkey and the EU.
When asked whether the Cyprus issue was brought onto agenda during the conversation, Boucher said that Gul and Powell reiterated their determination to find a solution.
