STAR- It seems that the recent Iranian nuclear swap deal brokered by Turkey and Brazil did not satisfy `Western' countries. A US-proposed draft resolution seeking new sanctions against Iran has already been handed out to the members of United Nations Security Council.
There may be many reasons behind major powers pursuing new Iran sanctions. First, it may be aimed at preventing Iran from emerging as a regional power. Second, they fear that Iran may continue its work to build nuclear weapon in a way not known to Turkey and Brazil. Third, seeking new sanctions may be a tool to convince Iran to compromise more with regard to its nuclear program as the deal marks a beginning but doesn't mean a full guarantee. Another reason for trying to impose fresh sanctions against Tehran may be related to Iran's function pushing big powers to act together. It seems that the US, which won backing from Russia for the new sanctions, found the opportunity to gather European members of NATO around itself.
The insistence on new sanctions may increase the role of Turkey and Brazil in this process. The mediation of these two countries can defuse the tension. Turkish and Brazilian leaders can be nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize. However, what is more important is that they can have a stronger say in the UN system which is possible to be changed.
