ANKARA, Dec 17 (AFP) - Turkish and EU officials Friday resolved a dispute over demands that Ankara recognize the Greek Cypriot government of EU member Cyprus, CNN Turk television reported from Brussels.
The unsourced report said the EU dropped a demand for Turkey to initial a protocol that would have amounted to de facto recognition of Cyprus; it will instead make do with a verbal declaration of good will by Turkey over the issue.
The recognition of the sovereignty of the Greek Cypriot government which rules two-thirds of the island, the remainder being held by a Turkish Cypriot administration acknowledged only by Ankara, was part of the terms in a draft EU proposal to open membership talks with Turkey in October 2005.
