SARAJEVO- Serbia has officially announced its intention to apply for candidacy for the European Union next Tuesday, a statement issued by the Presidency of the Republic of Serbia said Friday.

The statement, carried by Serbian media, said that Serbian President Boris Tadic would submit a formal request in this regard to Prime Minister of Sweden Fredrik Reinfeldt, whose country chairs the current round of the European Union.

The statement said that the Serbian Government Council, supervising Serbia's efforts for EU membership, will convene a meeting on Saturday to put the final touches on Serbia's request, which will enable the latter to start negotiations with the European Union over membership.
