UN Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon recommended a 6-month extension of the mandate of the UN Peace Keeping Force in Cyprus (UNFICYP) as the current mission expires on December 15, 2009.
The latest report on the UN operations in Cyprus was submitted to the Security Council on Wednesday for discussion on December 9. The move is expected to be adopted on December 14 to extend the mandate until June 15, 2010.
According to the report, Ban Ki-Moon affirms that there is considerable progress in talks between the two leaders; however, proceeding of the UNFICYP would be beneficial as sides have not assumed in depth the expected role in support of a comprehensive settlement.
The UN Peace Keeping Force in Cyprus currently has 858 military staff and 69 policemen on the island.
