Turkish Foreign Ministry made a written statement upon the new US strategy in Afghanistan, expecting Turkey to be more active.
US Ambassador to Turkey James Jeffrey said they expect Turkey to be more active in and send more troops to Afghanistan.
Turkish National Defense Minister Vecdi Gönül made a statement upon the US demand of more troops from Turkey.
The minister said that the number of training teams has been increased from one to four and Turkey has sent to a reinforcement unit of 958 troops in the past one month, raising the number of Turkish troops to 1750 in Afghanistan.
In a written statement, Turkish Foreign Ministry wished the United States good luck with the new strategy while implying its reluctance in sending belligerent troops.
The statement emphasized that the problems in Afghanistan cannot only be solved through military measures, also calling on the international community to carry on its support.
Noting that Turkey's commitment to Afghanistan is long-term, the Foreign Ministry statement underlined Turkey's contributions to security and stability continue within this respect.
Ankara also underscored that after the long and difficult election process the future of Afghanistan will be determined with the leadership and ownership of the Afghans.
The statement also announced that preparations for the regional summit that will be hosted by Turkey and joined by Afghanistan's neighbors and some observers had already started.
The US demand for more troops is expected to come up during Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan's meeting with US President Barack Obama on December 7.
