Hamid Karzai, who was reelected the Afghan President after a controversial election, was sworn in for a second five-year term in Afghan capital Kabul today.
Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu represents Turkey at the inauguration ceremony.
Tight security measures have been taken in Kabul for the oath taking ceremony of Karzai, who was declared winner of the presidential election after his rival and Former Foreign Minister Abdullah Abdullah had withdrawn from the second round of election.
Streets were sealed off and Thursday was declared national day for security reasons. The ceremony was attended by ministers and political figures from 40 countries, including US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.
"I swear to obey and safeguard the provisions of the sacred religion of Islam, to observe the constitution and other laws of Afghanistan and supervise their implementation," Karzai said in front of foreign and Afghan dignitaries in his palace in Kabul.
Karzai in his speech he made after the swearing in ceremony also called for a "Loya Jirga", a traditional grand assembly, which under Afghanistan's constitution can take precedence over all government institutions.
The Afghan President also said a number of expert ministers will be appointed in the new cabinet.
Touching upon Western criticisms over cases of corruption in Afghanistan, Karzai said they are aware of the level of corruption, and ready to tackle it.
As the newly elected leader is expected to solve these issues in his 5 year term, Turkey supports the Afghan leader.
In the meantime, Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu is holding official contacts in capital Kabul on the sidelines of Karzai's oath taking ceremony.
