ISTANBUL - Turkcell Director General Sureyya Ciliv said on Tuesday that Turkcell would give 3G service in 81 provinces and Turkcell`s coverage area reached 60 percent.
Speaking at a news conference to give information about Turkcell`s services to be given in 3G period, Turkcell`s CEO Ciliv said Turkcell has brought new technologies to Turkey.
"A new era will begin in Turkey and 3G is like the gateway for it," said Turkcell CEO Sureyya Ciliv said, adding that 3G would add a very big strength to Turkey both in social and economic sense.
Ciliv said they signed roaming deal with 177 operators in 100 countries.
He said the customers would be able to access internet with a half unit price when compared with the past.
Ciliv said 3G was 100 times rapid technology when compared with the past, "this means this technology will facilitate both our individual and working life."
Turkcell CEO said with the 3G, everybody would always be able to access internet from wherever he goes.
"Despite the economic crisis in the world, Turkcell invested 2.1 billion lira in Turkey in 2009."
"At the moment, 3 million telephones are compatible with 3G. I recommend the customers to buy telephones that have 3G and larger screens. Thanks to those telephones, everybody will have small computers with themselves," he said.
Asked when Turkcell would start 3G technology, Ciliv said Turkcell has started tests regarding LTE (Long-Term Evolution, which is the last step toward the 4th generation of radio technologies designed to increase the capacity and speed of mobile telephone networks) technology.
Turkish mobile phone users will begin using 3G mobile systems that allow high-speed data transfer starting July 30.
Turkey`s leading mobile operators Turkcell, Avea and Vodafone, which have signed contracts with BTK on April 30, have completed their technical preparations for transition to 3G technology.
3G technology will boost the speed of internet connection in Turkey by 10 times, reducing the time to download a movie from 7.5 hours to 6.5 minutes.
3G is a wireless industry term for a collection of international standards and technologies aimed at increasing efficiency and improving the performance of mobile wireless networks.
Services offered by 3G technology include wide-area wireless voice telephone, video calls, and wireless data, all in a mobile environment.
Compared to 2G and 2.5G services, 3G allows simultaneous use of speech and data services and higher bit rates.
Thus, 3G networks enable network operators to offer users a wider range of more advanced services while achieving greater network capacity through improved spectral efficiency.
Turkcell will launch its 3G services in all parts of Turkey at the same time.
