Official: Missing Maersk Alabama weapons believed accounted for

WASHINGTON - Investigators believe they know what happened to two weapons that went missing in the wake of the rescue of Capt. Richard Phillips from the Maersk Alabama, a senior U.S. military official told CNN.

Phillips was rescued on Easter Sunday after his ship was attacked by Somali pirates who took him hostage. An AK-47 used by the pirates is believed to have washed overboard, the official said. The second missing weapon, described as a pistol, was apparently taken by one of the Navy SEALs who participated in the rescue as a memento, the official said. The official would not say whether any disciplinary action was taken.

But the Naval Criminal Investigative Service is looking into now $30,000 disappeared after Special Forces troops shot and killed three pirates, freeing Phillips and ending the multi-day siege. The money had been removed from the ship's safe by Phillips, at the direction of the pirates holding him captive.
