Siemens wins UMTS contract with US mobile phone giant Cingular

MUNICH, Germany, Dec 1 (AFP) - German electronics group Siemens said Wednesday it had won a large contract with Cingular, the leading US mobile phone operator, to supply a UMTS network over the next several years.
The value of the contract was not disclosed, but a source close to the deal said it could be worth up to one billion euros (1.3 billion dollars).
A Siemens spokesman declined to comment on the one-billion-euro figure.
Siemens Com, the new Siemens telecoms division formed last month in the merger of its fixed-line and mobile businesses, won the contract with Cingular.
Under the contract, Siemens Com will provide a Universal Mobile Telecommunications System network, which allows high-speed wireless data and services transmission.
