Kyiv Council Rejects Runoff Result, Calls on Parliament to Act

The Kyiv city council voted on 22 November 2004 to reject the results of Ukraine's presidential runoff and called on the national parliament to take the same position.

Two cities in Ukraine's opposition-dominated west, Lviv and Ivano-Frankivsk, had already refused to recognize the contested outcome and declared opposition candidate Viktor Yushchenko the winner of Sunday's vote.

Official tallies credited the victory to Prime Minister Viktor Yanukovich, Yushchenko's pro-Russia rival.
