President Talat: A Solution Would Not Be Found Without Turkish Guarantees On The Island

In an interview to the Kathimerini newspaper, President Mehmet Ali Talat evaluated the latest developments concerning the Cyprus issue. President Mehmet Ali Talat has pointed out that a solution would not be found without `Turkish guarantees' on the island. The President said this problem was the result of the conflict between Turkish Cypriots and Greek Cypriots in the past.
While listing the crucial points suggested by the Turkish Cypriot Side, the President said that the Turkish Cypriot Side does not want any solution without Turkey's active guarantee.
Touching upon the Orams Case, President Talat said the European Union Commission had asked the European Court of Justice not to make a decision on the Orams Case while Cyprus peace negotiations continue but judges did not confirm this suggestion by the commission.
Referring to the ongoing peace talks, Talat said huge differences have occurred on the property and execution chapters due to the exaggerated proposals put forward by the Greek Cypriot Leader Dimitris Christofias.
Stressing that the federation that will be established after the solution will only be formed on the basis of a bi-zonal, bi-communal resultant state, the President said the establishment of a single state with a single community is impossible.
