ANKARA - Turkish President Ahmet Necdet Sezer said on Monday, ''two peoples in Cyprus can live together in peace and security after realizing that a possible solution depends on equal partnership.''
President Sezer sent a congratulatory message to President Rauf Denktas of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) through Turkish Presidency Secretary General Kemal Nehrozoglu to mark the 21st anniversary of foundation of the TRNC.
In his message, President Sezer said, ''the TRNC is the symbol of Turkish Cypriot people's will to live freely and humanly. Turkish Cypriot people's historical and legal rights have come into being in the TRNC rising on modern and democratic grounds.''
''Two peoples in Cyprus can live together in peace and security after realizing that a possible solution depends on equal partnership. Turkish Cypriot side is in favor of a fair and lasting solution, and fulfilled its responsibilities to this end. However, the Greek Cypriot side does not accept a political compromise on the basis of equal partnership,'' he said.
President Sezer added, ''we expect the international community, the UN and the EU to take concrete steps to put an end to unfair embargoes and restrictions imposed on Turkish Cypriot people for years. Turkey will continue to help the TRNC achieve its economic and social development.''
