Nigeria to reduce fuel prices to head off oil strike

ABUJA (AFP) - The Nigerian government is to increase petrol and diesel subsidies in order to reduce pump prices in the hope of averting a general strike, the head of the government fuel committee revealed.
Deputy senate president Ibrahim Mantu told reporters Monday that President Olusegun Obasanjo had agreed to allow the committee and a government fuel price agency to order a reduction in the pump price of petrol, from 52 naira (around 40 cents) a litre to 49 naira.
