JERUSALEM (CNN) - Israeli police Tuesday shot and killed the driver of a car who tried to run over border policemen at the site of a house demolition in East Jerusalem, a police spokesman said.

The house belonged to Hussam Dwayat, a Palestinian who killed three Israelis during a bulldozer attack in Jerusalem in July. He was shot and killed immediately after the attack.

Earlier this month, Israel's Supreme Court ruled in favor of the government, allowing the demolition of attackers' homes as a deterrent to future attacks.

It marked the first demolition of a Palestinian attacker's home since 2005 when an Israeli military commission determined that the policy failed to deter future strikes on Israelis.

Israel did carry out home demolitions during its military operation in Gaza earlier this year.
