WASHINGTON (CNN) - An Iranian citizen living in California has been arrested and charged with conspiracy to export U.S.-made military aircraft parts to Iran, the Justice Department announced Monday.
Federal authorities say Baktash Fattahi was arrested at his home in Lancaster, and will be kept in custody until he is moved to Miami to face charges.
Ten others also charged in the conspiracy are believed to be in Iran or the United Arab Emirates, and are not in custody, authorities said.
The indictment, returned in Miami, charges the conspirators with obtaining and illegally shipping parts for F-5 and F-14 fighter jets and "Cobra" and "Huey" helicopters used by the Iranian military.
The indictment says Fattahi and a conspirator in Plantation, Florida, had received purchase orders and shipped parts through Dubai to Iran in violation of an existing arms embargo.
If convicted, the conspirators could face sentences of 10 to 20 years in prison and fines of up to $1 million, Justice Department prosecutors said.
Authorities from the Defense Department, State Department, Commerce Department, Treasury Department and Department of Homeland Security all participated in the investigation, the Justice Department said.
