LEFKOSA - President Rauf Denktas of Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) said, ''Greek Cypriot leader Tassos Papadopoulos' call for Turkey to recognize Cyprus Republic shows he does not want consensus.''
Denktas told reporters, ''Papadopoulos said 'Turkey should recognize Cyprus Republic. We want to talk this issue with Turkey.' Statements of Papadopoulos are ugly and insolent.''
''Greek Cypriots' demand of recognition is insolence and trick,'' he added.
Denktas said, ''I have earlier said that Greek Cypriots applied to the EU with this intent. The application is political. Greek Cypriots want to eliminate 1960 agreements through EU as they could not do this by arms.''
Denktas reminded the statement of Turkish Foreign Ministry which was released on May 1st. He said, ''this statement said referendums proved that there are two separate peoples in Cyprus and Turkey will continue to recognize TRNC.''
''EU should now decide that there are two separate peoples in Cyprus and nobody has the authority to make one of these peoples government of the other. And EU should behave in line with this decision. Otherwise, there will be no agreement in Cyprus,'' he noted.
