ANKARA - Turkish President Ahmet Necdet Sezer said on Saturday, ''Turkey's membership to the EU will contribute to the Union's becoming a global value which is not restricted with a certain geography and religious beliefs.''
Releasing a message to mark the end of Ramadan, President Sezer stressed, ''Turkey constitutes a successful model of development with its secular and democratic structure and its initiatives to integrate with the modern world. Turkey's membership to the EU will contribute to the Union's becoming a global value which is not restricted with a certain geography and religious beliefs. Current diversity in the EU will have new dimensions with Turkey's cultural assets.''
''I believe that the EU Council will make a decision on December 17th to open entry talks with Turkey. This decision will underline that differences among civilizations and faiths are, in fact, resources cherishing cultural wealthiness. The decision will also prove that the Western and the Islam worlds can embrace each other on the basis of universal values such as human rights, democracy, supremacy of law and tolerance,'' President Sezer added.
