U.S. envoys Jeffrey Feltman and Daniel Shapiro have arrived in Syria and are meeting with Syrian Foreign Minister Walid Moallem, a Syrian government spokesman said Saturday.
U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton announced earlier this week that the meeting will explore Washington's relationship with Damascus.
"There are a number of issues that we have between Syria and the United States, as well as the larger regional issues that Syria obviously poses," she said at the time.
Last week, Feltman, the State Department's top Middle East official, met with the Syrian ambassador to the United States, marking a resumption of diplomatic dialogue after nearly five years.
