WASHINGTON (AFP) - Paul Klebnikov, an American journalist who had published articles denouncing the Russian mafia and who was murdered in Moscow last July, has received a posthumous press award.
Klebnikov, 41, editor of the Russian language edition of Forbes Magazine, was given the Knight International Press Fellowship Award at a ceremony in Washington, along with Algerian journalist Ali Djerri and Romanian journalist Paul Radu.
Klebnikov, killed on a central Moscow street as he was leaving his office on July 9, had published several issues of Forbes on Russia's richest personalities and had denounced the Russian mafia's grip on the country's economy.
He also published a book at the end of the 1990s on Russian oligarch Boris Berezovski and, shortly before his death, another book on Chechnya.
Moscow police in September announced the arrest of two people suspected of involvement in Klebnikov's death, but friends of the journalist say the investigation is stalled.
