MADRID (AFP) - Spanish telecommunications giant Telefonica said it plans to add 50 million clients to its customer base, taking the total to 165 million, and add 10 percent to per capita earnings by 2008.
At a management meeting in Madrid of the world's fifth largest telecoms group as measured by market capitalisation, Telefonica chairman Cesar Alierta said the objective was to create "the world's biggest and best integrated telecoms group".
Telefonica sources quoted Alierta as saying that the group "must reinforce the way we function as an integrated group, offering integrated solutions to each customer segment, be it in mobile or fixed communications, voice (data) or services."
Alierta added that he wanted to see an improvement in the breadth of services and products on offer as well as in the group's sales and distribution channels while keeping at the forefront of technological developments in the sector.
Alierta was addressing 1,000 Telefonica executives based in 17 countries where the country has operations, in the group's largest ever management "summit".
