Portugal to continue to work closely with US after election

LISBON, Nov 3 (AFP) - Portugal will continue to work closely with the United States, as it has in the past, following the "clear" re-election of George W Bush in presidential elections there, Foreign Minister Antonio Monteiro said Wednesday.
"The Americans have made a clear choice. There was a strong will on the part fo the American people which is more clear than in the elections of 2000, that strengthened the Republican party," he told national news agency Lusa.
"For Portugal there is no change. We would work with any US administration although with this one we have come to establish a very close working relationship," he added.
Portugal's centre-right government vocally supported the US-led invasion of Iraq and deployed some 130 national guards, a militarized police force, to the war-ravaged country in November 2003 to help provide security.
