ANKARA - The number of motor vehicles registered in Turkey as of August, 2004 has reached 9,977,505, said authorities today.
According to the State Institute of Statistics (DIE), 5,280,454 of motor vehicles in Turkey are automobiles. The remaining vehicles include 1,187,379 pick up trucks, 1,184,116 motorcycles, 638,164 trucks, 311,479 minibuses and 143,733 buses.
The city with the most number of vehicles is Istanbul (2,013, 218). Ankara ranks second with 914,569 vehicles. One out of every six Istanbul residents owns a vehicle.
Based on population predictions for 2005, one out of every 14 Turks has a car and one out of every seven citizens has a motor vehicle.
