Turkey Contributes To Anti-locust Campaign In Africa

ANKARA - Turkey has been contributing to anti-locust campaign in Africa.
Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs said on Thursday that Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) Director-General Jacques Diouf asked Turkey to send a military cargo plane for transportation of insecticides.
''In an effort to contribute to multinational efforts to contain swarms of locusts that are threatening to devastate crops in Africa, Turkish Air Forces sent a C-130 cargo plane and six personnel to Algeria on October 25th. The plane carrying 15 tons of insecticides proceeded from Algeria to Niamey, Niger on October 26th. After handing over insecticides to FAO authorities, the plane returned to Turkey yesterday,'' the ministry said.
The ministry added that Turkey has sent humanitarian aid worth of 9 million U.S. dollars to Iran, Iraq, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Georgia, Palestine and Sudan since the beginning of 2004.
