TURKISH PARLIAMENT VOTED FOR ESTABLISHMENT OF DIRECTORATE GENERAL FOR WOMEN'S STATUS
The Turkish Parliament unanimously voted to establish Women's Status General Directorate. The newly created body will protect and develop the rights of women and strengthen their status in social, economic, cultural and political activities. Furthermore, the new body will try to stop violence against women.
NATIONAL SECURITY COUNCIL CALLS ON EU TO BE FAIR ABOUT TURKEY
Under the chairmanship of President Ahmet Necdet Sezer, the National Security Council (NSC) convened yesterday. The NSC called on the EU to treat Turkey equally as other candidate countries. The NSC meeting was attended by its first civilian secretary general Yigit Alpogan.

SHE WAS ALMOST BECOMING A PRINCESS
26-year-old Turkish girl Berna Yagci offered ''mirra'', a hard black coffee of the southeastern Anatolia region of Turkey, to Prince Charles during his visit to the southeastern city of Mardin. Those who accompanied Prince Charles warned him saying, ''if you put the empty cup on the tray (after you drink the mirra), you should marry this girl according to our traditions.'' Charles gave the cup to the girl in the last minute, and said, ''you were almost becoming a princess.''
NSC: LAUSANNE (TREATY) CAN'T BE DISCUSSED
In its meeting, the National Security Council (NSC) stressed that the Lausanne Treaty, which laid the ground of foundation of the Republic of Turkey, could never be opened to discussion. The NSC stated that Kurds also played an ''essential'' role during foundation of the Republic of Turkey.

PLEASING CRISIS
Those who have lobbied against EU's setting a date for Turkey to start negotiations had to face a new development regarding Italian Rocco Buttiglione, new European commissioner for justice and human rights, who is a misogynist. This new development will draw attention of anti-Turkey circles to another dimension. Buttiglione, who is announced persona non grata since he humiliates women and homosexuals, hampered efforts of the Commission. A few hours before the vote of confidence at the European Parliament (EP), Barroso, new president of the European Commission, wanted a few more weeks of time, and said that he would change his team since his commissioner drew reactions of the EP. The former commissioner, who says ''negotiations should start with Turkey'', will be in the office during this period.
HERE IS KIRCI'S FAKE PASSPORT BEARING NAME OF M. ALI SAHBAZ
A fake passport belonging to Haluk Kirci, who was wanted by red bulletin, was found two weeks after efforts were launched to arrest him. Kirci, who was arrested in Ukraine when he was about to flee to Morocco, was carrying a passport belonging to another Turkish citizen, M. Ali Sahbaz. Sahbaz said, ''one of my relatives told me to get a passport and promised that he would take me to Austria. Then, he disappeared with my passport.''

ERDOGAN DUE TO ITALY
Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan will leave for Italy on Thursday. He will attend the signing ceremony of European Constitution and will have meetings with the executives of the Liberals and Democratic Alliance for Europe groups in the EP, on October 29th.
CICEK: ''KIRCI'S DOCUMENTS ARE READY''
Justice Minister Cemil Cicek said that necessary documents would be sent to Ukraine next Monday for extradition of Haluk Kirci. Kirci who was sentenced to death penalty for killing seven young members of a labor party in Bahcelievler neighborhood of Ankara in 1978, was captured in a town near Ukrainian capital Kiev last week.

German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder said that entry talks between Turkey and the EU would start in 2005. Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Foreign Minister & Deputy Prime Minister Abdullah Gul satisfied with the mini summit in German capital.
WARPLANE HITS TIP OF MINARET
A Turkish Air Forces F-4 warplane accidentally hit and damaged the metal crescent on the top of a minaret near the home of Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan in Ankara. No one was injured. The warplane was flying in a formation during a rehearsal for an upcoming air show Friday to mark the 81st anniversary of the modern secular Republic of Turkey.

YILMAZ SENT TO HIGH TRIBUNAL
Turkey's parliament voted to send former prime minister Mesut Yilmaz and former state minister Gunes Taner to the High Tribunal to stand trial over a bank privatization scandal. Both Yilmaz and Taner face charges of rigging the privatization of Turkbank in favor of the eventual winner. The move to send the two to the High Tribunal was approved by an overwhelming majority of Turkish deputies.
NSC CONVENES
Besides Yigit Alpogan, the first civilian secretary general of National Security Council (NSC), Land Forces Commander General Yasar Buyukanit and Gendarme Forces Commander General Fevzi Turkeri attended the regular meeting for the first time. Turkey's EU membership process was high on agenda of the meeting.

TERRORISTS OPEN FIRE ON A MILITARY VEHICLE KILLING A SOLDIER
Terrorists opened fire on a military vehicle patrolling around Genc town of eastern city of Bingol, killing one soldier. Three soldiers were wounded in the attack.
CLASH ERUPTS AMONG LEFTIST TRADE UNIONS
Arguments among leftist trade unions Nakliyat-Is and Tum-Is turned into an armed clash in western city of Izmir. Anadolu Agency photo-journalist Kenan Cimen was shot in his leg during the clash.

LEADERS DISPLAY OPTIMISTIC ATTITUDE ABOUT TURKEY'S EU MEMBERSHIP
In a mini-summit this week in Berlin, Turkey tried to persuade German and French leaders to support Turkey's EU membership. French President Chirac stated that ''accession talks for Turkey will begin in 2005.'' According to German Chancellor Schroeder, ''Turkey will eventually become a full member of the EU.''
