MOSUL, Iraq, Oct 25 (AFP) - Four people were killed and four wounded Monday in a double car bombing against the governor and other administrative targets in the northern Iraqi city of Mosul, officials and the US military said.
"Three people were killed and a fourth seriously wounded when a car bomb exploded at the governorate building of Nineveh province," said Dr Abdel Kader Mohammed from the city's main hospital.
A second doctor said the three bodies had not yet been identified.
The building, in the centre of Mosul, has been the target of numerous attacks in recent months, with the latest explosion ripping through a garage.
The US military said the three people killed were "suspected of being responsible for the attack".
It said that almost at the same time a mortar round was fired at a gas station across the street causing a large explosion and fire that was contained by firefighters without causing casualties.
The governor of Mosul, Duraid Kashmula, was holding a meeting in the building at the time of the attack, it said.
About 20 minutes later, a second car bomb targeted a member of an Iraqi liason office with the US-led military, Iraqi security officials said, while the US military said the attack was carried out by a suicide bomber.
"A car bomb exploded in the path of a convoy for General Motaz Faqaa, a member of the liaison committee in the Andalous district (northern Mosul) at 11:20 am (0820 GMT)," said Lieutenant Colonel Fadel Mohammed Abdelsatter.
"Two guards were injured, but General Faqaa was unharmed," he told AFP.
At the hospital, Dr Mohammed later raised the injury toll to three security guards.
Faqaa escaped another attack four months ago, sources in Iraq's main northern city said.
Mosul, 370 kilometres (230 miles) north of Baghdad, is a frequent scene of attacks and assassinations targeting Iraq's fledgling security forces, political figures and the military.
The latest bombings came on the same day as a similar attack in Baghdad against an Australian army convoy that left three Iraqis dead and 16 people wounded, including three Australian soldiers.
