Two Turkish soldiers killed, four hurt in mine blast

DIYARBAKIR, Turkey, Oct 24 (AFP) - Two Turkish soldiers died and four were injured when their vehicle was hit by a remote-controlled mine, security sources said Sunday.
The incident happened in the predominantly Kurdish region of Diyarbakir in southeastern Turkey overnight.
The troops were on patrol in a rural area near the town of Dicle not far from the border with Iraq.
Kurdish insurgents of the KONGRA-GEL movement (formerly the Kurdistan Workers' Party, or PKK) declared a unilateral ceasefire in 1999 after their leader Abdullah Ocalan was arrested, but ended it in June.
Since then they have used remote-controlled mines on several occasions to attack Turkish forces.
In the years between 1984, when the PPK uprising began, and the declaration of the ceasefire in 1999 37,000 people are estimated to have died in southeastern Turkey.
In a separate incident Kurdish rebels used a time bomb to blow up an oil pipeline in the province of Batman in the east of the country, the Anatolia news agency reported Sunday.
