KABUL, Oct 24 (AFP) - An American woman has died after being wounded by a suicide bomber in Kabul, the US military said Sunday, taking the death toll from the attack on a crowded shopping street popular with foreigners to two.
"There was a US citizen killed in the suicide attack yesterday and it was a woman," Major Mark McCann, a spokesman for the US-led military coalition, told AFP. He had no details of her identity or what time she died.
An Afghan girl who was selling books was also killed in the Saturday afternoon attack, while three Icelandic peacekeepers and five local people were wounded.
An unidentified man with six grenades strapped to his waist blew himself up on the city`s famous Chicken Street at 3:30 pm (1100 GMT) Saturday, Afghan police and Western military officials said.
Western embassies and aid organisations had warned for months that the shopping strip could be attacked by insurgents.
The NATO-led International Security Assistance Force said in a statement the attacker "had all the hallmarks of a suicide bomber."
The Taliban, which US-led forces ousted from rule in 2001, claimed responsibility and warned of further attacks, raising the spectre of more violence following the surprisingly peaceful October 9 presidential election.
