ANKARA - Turkish Foreign Minister Abdullah Gul expressed hope on Saturday that a possible enlargement of the United Nations (UN) Security Council would increase Turkey's chance to be represented in the Council.
Gul, who issued a message on the 59th anniversary of foundation of the UN, said that Turkey, one of the founder members of the UN, had always supported goals and principles of the UN Charter.
Turkey had supported UN's socio-economic efforts, and contributed to peace-keeping efforts, Gul said.
Gul noted that Turkey also actively contributed to UN's efforts to maintain international peace and stability, and supported efforts to assure peace in Cyprus, Middle East and Iraq.
Turkey supported the reform process launched by UN Secretary General to catch up with political, economic, cultural and social changes in the world, Gul stated.
Recalling that Turkey had run its candidacy for a non-permanent seat at the Security Council for the term 2009-2010, Gul said, ''we believe that our country, which has not had the opportunity to be represented in the Security Council for more than 40 years, will make more contribution to enhancement of international peace and security, by becoming a member of this Council.''
