ANKARA - Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan expressed belief on Saturday that Turkey`s contributions to world peace and stability would increase if it became a non-permanent member of the United Nations (UN) Security Council.
Erdogan, who issued a message on the 59th anniversary of foundation of UN, said that the UN had pioneered many international initiatives, aiming at fighting against international terrorism, the biggest threat against humanity.
``Turkey, one of the founder members and one of the countries which has suffered much from terrorism, has actively joined these initiatives of the UN. Contributions of our country to future initiatives will continue, and we will continue to share our experience in fight against terrorism with other world countries,`` Erdogan said.
Erdogan added, ``it should not be forgotten that terrorism, one of the elements violating human rights, is threatening all world countries, irrespective of their religion, language and race. And, terrorist acts can never be justified by any reason. We believe that contributions of our country, which has announced its candidacy for a non-permanent seat at the Security Council for the term 2009-2010, to world peace and stability will increase if it becomes a member. And, we confirm that Turkey, as a founder member of the UN, is committed to principles and goals of the Organization, and will continue to fulfil its responsibilities.``
