US soldier injured in eastern Afghanistan, Taliban claims responsibility

KABUL, Oct 23 (AFP) - A US soldier was slightly injured in a bomb attack in eastern Afghanistan on Saturday, a US military official said.
The soldier was injured when the vehicle he was driving hit a home-made bomb that suspected militants planted in the eastern province of Nangarhar, US military spokeswoman Master Sargeant Wendy Frable told AFP.
"His injuries were very minor injuries," she said, without giving further details.
The Taliban clamimed responsiblity for the attack, which occurred in Wazy district close to the Pakistani border.
"We carried out the attack -- we killed some American soldiers," Abdul Latif Hakimi, who claims to speak for the militia that US-led forces ousted from government in 2001, told AFP by satellite phone from an undisclosed location.
The Nangarhar bomb blast came as a suicide attacker struck in a busy shopping district of Kabul on Saturday afternoon, for which Hakimi also said the Taliban was responsible.
At least seven people, including three NATO peacekeepers, were injured in the attack on the famed "Chicken Street", which was the most brazen assault by militants since the historic October 9 presidential elections.
"We didn't attack the elections because we did not want to harm and kill innocent people, but the Americans and foreign troops are our enemies," Hakimi said.
