Saffron Project Presented With International Awards

LONDON - ''Saffron Project'', a joint project of the Yapi Kredi Retirement Fund and the Turkish Foundation to Combat Erosion for Reforestation and for Production of Natural Habitats (TEMA) in southeastern city of Sanliurfa was presented with two international awards, sources told the A.A on Friday.
It was chosen the best environmental project in the Golden World Award Contest of the International Public Relations Association (IPRA). The project was also presented with the UN honorable mention award.
''Saffron'' is a pilot project aiming to provide farmers with alternative agriculture opportunities. Saffron, one of the most expensive plants in the world, has been cultivated in Harran Plain in Sanliurfa as a result of the project.
Saffron is considered one of the oldest and most precious spices. It was used in victory ceremonies in the ancient times, and given to kings as a present during their coronations.
The first step of the project was taken in October of 2003. The project will end in 2006.
