HERE ARE TELEPHONE CALL TRANSCRIPTS OF THAT NIGHT
Nur Batur, correspondent of Hurriyet daily in Athens, is making public the transcripts of historical telephone conversation made during the Kardak (islets) crisis which almost brought Turkey and Greece on the brink of war. When the crisis was at its critical stage in January of 1996, Bill Clinton, U.S. President then, called Suleyman Demirel, Turkish President then. Here is the historic dialogue that was held at 9.00 p.m. on January 30th, 1996:
Clinton: I am uneasy about (possibility) of a Turkish-Greek war. I would like to be assured by you that you will refrain from military clashes. I will ask the Greek prime minister to withdraw his soldiers.
Demirel: I am also uneasy. We don`t want any clashes. If Greece withdraws its soldiers, and lowers its flag there, the problem will be solved.
Clinton: I will do my best.
Demirel: At first, there were neither any flags nor soldiers on the islets. We will be grateful if you do anything (to solve the problem).
Clinton: Thank you. I will do my best, and we will be in contact.
Demirel: Thank you, Mr. President.
Kardak crisis started as a group of Greek people headed by a priest hoisted a Greek flag on the Kardak islets on the Aegean Sea. Then, a Turkish flag was hoisted on the islets. After this development, Greek soldiers landed on one of the islets, and then Turkish soldiers were deployed on the other. The crisis which almost brought the two countries on the brink of war, was overcome as two countries withdrew from the islets.
ERDOGAN: HOMOSEXUALS ALSO HAVE THEIR OWN LAWS
Upon questions of reporters during his visit to French capital of Paris regarding the problems of homosexuals, Turkish Prime Minister said, ``homosexuals also have their own laws.``

TURKISH ARMY WOULD ENTER ALEPPO
When Turkey gave the message in 1998 that ``Syria would either hand over Abdullah Ocalan, the head of the terrorist organization PKK, or war``, Turkish army prepared itself for every possibility. Turkish army would firstly enter Aleppo, and enter Damascus if necessary. Huseyin Kivrikoglu, Turkish Chief of General Staff then, commanded Land Forces Commander Atilla Ates, saying, ``we should give a very obvious message to Syria who is protecting Ocalan. Get prepared.`` General Ates then made plans, and these plans were implemented. On October 16th, Ates made his historic speech in southern town of Reyhanli (near the Syrian border), and showed Syria as a target. Syria got the message, and deported Ocalan. If it had not deported Ocalan, Turkish Armed Forces (TSK) would launch an operation.
``WE ARE SO LUCKY THAT...``
The Group of the Greens/European Free Alliance of the European Parliament (EP) entertained themselves at the Topkapi Palace last night. Daniel Cohn-Bendit and Monica Frassoni, the co-chairpersons of the group, danced and entertained very much with songs of Turkish singers like Tarkan and Sezen Aksu. Bendit said, ``we are so lucky that we have met people who will add new values to the European culture.`` On the other hand, speaking at the conference held by the Group of the Greens, German Foreign Minister Joschka Fischer said, ``those who are saying `no` to Turkey today, will laugh for saying `no` to Turkey tomorrow.``

YALLAH VOTES TO KERRY
Bush will pay the price of terrorism atmosphere formed after September 11th to American Muslims. American Muslims were called to ballot boxes to vote Democrat Kerry in U.S. elections. This movement which is started two weeks before elections has become a bad surprise for Bush. Because in previous elections, Muslims had voted for Bush who won presidency against Al Gore.
OSKANYAN: RECOGNITION OF GENOCIDE IS NOT A PRE-CONDITION
Armenian Foreign Minister Vartan Oskanyan said that recognition of Armenian genocide is not a preliminary condition to start talks to straighten Turkish-Armenian relations.

HEADSCARF DISTORTION FROM ERDOGAN AGAIN
When two students, who were dismissed from a school in France because they did not remove their headscarves, Turkish Prime Minister Erdogan made an interesting statement. He said that there is a headscarf ban for students in Turkey, adding that there is not such an implementation in European countries in the aspect of freedom of education.
FISCHER AGAINST PRIVILEGED PARTNERSHIP
German Foreign Minister Joschka Fischer said that Progress Report for Turkey is a ``work of art``, adding that Turkey cannot be given privileged partnership instead of full membership. He said that even if entry talks start now, they will continue 10-15 years.

Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan gave the message to France that it is unnecessary to afraid of Turkey. Erdogan also met French Economy, Finance & Industry Minister Nicolas Sarkozy who criticizes Turkey most.
TRNC WITHOUT GOVERNMENT
Prime Minister Mehmet Ali Talat of Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) submitted the resignation of Republican Turkish Party (CTP)-Democrat Party (DP) coalition government to President Rauf Denktas yesterday.

PARIS IS NEXT ON THE LINE
The EU`s biggest countries have announced ``yes`` for Turkey`s membership. France is expected to be the next European giant to say ``yes`` for Turkey`s EU membership.
Both German Foreign Minister Joschka Fischer and the Greens in Istanbul have sent a message to French President Chirac and encouraged him to support the beginning of accession talks for Turkey.
WARNING TO TEACHERS
Huseyin Celik, the Minister of National Education, has stated that ``they will not tolerate teachers or educators who mistreat students.`` Reacting to a recent incident in Manisa, where a school principal called police forces after five students broke class glasses, Minister Celik said that ``there can not be teaching by mistreating children and over-reacting to their behaviors.``

HE COMPARED TURKEY`S MEMBERSHIP TO EUROPE`S SALVATION
German Foreign Minister Joschka Fischer said that Turkey`s European Union (EU) membership was as important as the D-Day (the day of the invasion of western Europe by Allied forces in World War II), which had a serious impact on the result of the war and which was considered as the beginning of salvation of Europe from Adolf Hitler (the Nazi dictator of Germany). Before he came to Turkey, Fischer interviewed with British BBC channel, and said, ``becoming a European doesn`t mean modernization. Modernizing an Islam country within the framework of common values of Europe is like a D-Day in the fight against terrorism.``
HOLLYWOOD TO SHOOT FILM ON FATIH THE CONQUEROR
The Hollywood has started to be interested in historical events and personalities in Anatolia. Hollywood producers, who were hosted in southern city of Antalya by the Turkish Culture & Tourism Ministry, offered some film projects which may contribute to Turkey`s promotion. Noah`s arc and Istanbul`s conquest are among projects in which the Hollywood is interested.

PM ERDOGAN IN FRANCE: ``SURELY WE ARE MUSLIMS, BUT WE SHARE THE SAME GOAL OF THE EU``
Participating in a gathering organized by the French International Relations Institute, Turkish Prime Minister Erdogan remarked that ``surely Turkey is Muslim, yet it shares the same goal of the EU.`` ``In reaching our goal, we are not going to cause any loss to the EU. It is a win-win scenario for both Turkey and Europe,`` reminded Erdogan.
TURKEY`S EU MEMBERSHIP IS AS IMPORTANT AS THE NORMANDY LANDING IN 1944
Joschka Fischer, the German Minister of Foreign Affairs, has stated that ``Turkey`s EU membership is as important as the Normandy landing in 1944.``
Visiting the BBC radio in London, Fischer remarked that ``in the next 50 years Turkey will be a shield against terror threats from the Middle East.`` ``After the September 11 attack, Turkey`s strategic importance in the Middle East and Caucasus has been better understood,`` added Fischer.
According to Minister Fischer, ``creating a strong Europe, in which the European children live in peace, depends largely on Turkey`s full EU membership.``
